The Ultimate International Travel Packing Checklist (2026 Edition)
A no-fluff, carry-on-friendly packing checklist that works for everything from a 5-day city break to a 3-week multi-country tour.
The single biggest upgrade you can make to your travel experience is packing lighter. No checked bags means no lost luggage, no waiting at carousels, and no aching shoulders climbing stairs in old European buildings. Use this checklist as your starting point – tweak for the season and destination.
Documents & money
- Passport (6+ months validity from return date)
- Printed visa / e-visa confirmation
- Two photocopies of your passport, kept separate from the original
- Driving license / international permit if you plan to drive
- Travel insurance card with the 24-hour helpline number
- One credit card + one debit card from different banks
- ~US $100 in small local notes (or USD as backup) for arrival
Tech & power
- Phone + charger
- Universal power adapter (look for one with USB-C PD)
- 10,000 mAh power bank (carry-on only – not allowed in checked bags)
- Noise-cancelling headphones
- Kindle or downloaded entertainment for flights
Clothing capsule (2-week trip)
- 5 t-shirts / blouses
- 2 long-sleeve layers
- 1 light sweater or fleece
- 1 packable rain shell
- 2 pairs of trousers / chinos
- 1 pair of shorts (warm climates)
- 1 dressier outfit for dinners
- Underwear & socks for 7 days (wash mid-trip)
- Comfortable walking shoes + sandals or flats
- Swimwear (even in "cold" destinations – many hotels have spas)
Toiletries & meds
Decant everything into 100ml bottles. A small zip pouch is your friend. Don't forget:
- Prescription medication in original packaging + a printed prescription
- Painkillers, antihistamine, anti-diarrhoeal, rehydration sachets
- Sunscreen (SPF 30+) and after-sun
- Mosquito repellent for tropical destinations
- A few plasters and antiseptic wipes
Smart extras most people forget
- Compression packing cubes – they double your suitcase capacity
- A reusable water bottle with a built-in filter
- A microfibre travel towel (tiny, fast-drying)
- Earplugs and an eye mask for hostels, dorms, or noisy hotels
- Photocopies of insurance and passport in your email/cloud storage
What NOT to pack
- Hair dryers – every hotel above 2-star has one
- Full-size toiletries – buy locally if you run out
- "Just in case" outfits you wouldn't wear at home
- Valuable jewellery – leave it locked at home
Pack on a Sunday, then take everything out and remove a third. You will never miss it.
Frequently asked questions
How many outfits should I pack for a 2-week trip?
7 tops, 4 bottoms, and 2 dressier pieces is plenty. Plan to do laundry once mid-trip rather than packing 14 of everything.
Can I really do international travel with carry-on only?
Yes – even for 3 weeks. The trick is choosing wrinkle-resistant fabrics in a coordinated colour palette so every piece pairs with every other.
